Lady stirs debate with claims about how some Igbo women treat young househelps

A Nigerian lady has sparked controversy after alleging that many married Igbo women mistreat their young househelps despite presenting themselves as deeply religious.

In a video shared on X (formerly Twitter), she claimed she was heavily criticised after previously sharing the same opinion online, insisting she was not generalising but speaking from what she had personally witnessed growing up.

According to her, many families prefer hiring young girls, sometimes between the ages of nine and 14, to care for their children and handle household chores.

In her words, she said:

“Have you noticed that Nigerians don’t like the truth? They like when you act blind to the obvious. Earlier this year, I made a video talking about how most Igbo women are wicked and how they maltreat their househelps. I’m Igbo, so I know what I’m saying.”

She further alleged that some of the young househelps are made to cook, clean, care for their children and run errands while receiving poor treatment.

The lady also criticised what she described as the hypocrisy of some overly religious people, claiming they appear devoted in church but fail to show kindness to those working in their homes.

“They are very good at praying and going to church, but they are very wicked. They won’t beat their own children, but the househelps suffer. Food and clothing become a problem for those children even when the families are comfortable,” she added.

She concluded by claiming that the treatment of househelps is noticeable in some churches, where, according to her, it is easy to distinguish the children of the family from the househelps.

The video has since generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users agreeing, while others accused her of unfairly stereotyping Igbo women and Catholics.
