At least 12 people have died and 44 others have been injured after a deadly three-vehicle accident on the Kumasi-Accra Highway near Konongo in the Ashanti Region.

According to a statement from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the crash occurred shortly after midnight on July 16, 2026, and involved a Tata passenger bus, a DAF cargo truck carrying tomatoes, and an empty fuel tanker.

Preliminary investigations showed that the cargo truck, which was travelling from Kumasi towards Accra, attempted to overtake another vehicle while driving on a slope.

The driver reportedly lost control of the truck and collided head-on with the passenger bus travelling from Accra to Bole.

The empty fuel tanker later crashed into the accident scene but did not significantly add to the casualties.

The GNFS confirmed that 12 people died in the accident, including nine males and three females. A total of 44 people were injured, with 30 suffering critical injuries.

The injured victims were taken to the Asante Akyem Government Hospital, where 32 casualties were admitted, while 12 others were sent to Steward Hospital for treatment.

“The Ghana National Fire Service, together with other emergency response agencies, carried out rescue operations, extricated trapped victims, and ensured the scene was secured to facilitate the safe evacuation of casualties and restoration of traffic flow,” the statement said.

The GNFS warned that wrongful overtaking continues to be one of the leading causes of fatal road crashes on the Kumasi-Accra Highway and urged drivers to exercise greater caution to prevent further accidents.
