2026 World Cup: USA Beat Australia 2-0 to Reach Round of 32

Co-hosts of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the United States men’s national soccer team, have secured a place in the Round of 32 after defeating the Australia men’s national soccer team 2-0 in their Group D clash on Friday.

The Americans made an impressive start and took the lead in the 11th minute when Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally turned the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a dangerous cross.

The United States maintained control throughout the first half and doubled their advantage just before the break through Alex Freeman.

Although the goal was initially ruled out for offside, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review confirmed Freeman was onside, allowing the goal to stand.

Australia responded with greater possession after halftime but found it difficult to break through the disciplined American defence.

The victory moves the United States to six points from two matches, confirming qualification for the knockout stage with one group game remaining after opening their campaign with a convincing 4-1 win over the Paraguay men’s national soccer team.

Australia, who defeated the Turkey men’s national football team 2-0 in their opening fixture, remain on three points and must avoid defeat against Paraguay in their final Group D match to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

The Americans recorded the victory without captain Christian Pulisic, who missed the match through injury, but still delivered another composed performance to strengthen their credentials as one of the early contenders for the World Cup title.
