Kano Prison Foils Attempt To Smuggle Indian Hemp Into Facility

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has foiled an attempt to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC), Kurmawa, in Kano State.
The command disclosed that a 40-year-old man was arrested on Sunday while allegedly attempting to throw the prohibited substance into the correctional facility.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, announced the development in a statement issued on Monday in Kano.
According to Kofarnassarawa, the suspect, who resides in Janguza Quarters, Kano, was apprehended at about noon by officers of the Armed Squad Unit following their vigilance and swift response.
He explained that the operation was conducted under the supervision of the Commander of the Armed Squad Unit, CSC Usman M. Sale.
The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for their alertness, professionalism and commitment to maintaining security within the custodial facility.
Yusuf-Lakpene also reaffirmed the command’s zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional centres.
He warned members of the public against attempting to introduce illicit drugs and other unauthorised materials into custodial facilities.
The controller further disclosed that the arrested suspect had been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
He assured the public that the command would continue to strengthen security measures across its custodial centres to prevent criminal activities and provide a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
Meanwhile, attempts to smuggle illicit substances into correctional facilities have been reported in other parts of the country.
In August 2026, a woman was arrested by the Ogun State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service for allegedly attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ibara, Abeokuta.
The latest incident highlights the continued efforts by correctional authorities to prevent prohibited substances from finding their way into custodial facilities across the country.
