“My friends would never” — Nigerian woman in US reveals why American men fail to meet her dating standards

A Nigerian woman living in the United States has explained why her friendship with Nigerian men has made it difficult for her to date other men.

The woman, who said she has lived in America for five years, explained that her Nigerian male friends have set a high standard through the little things they do for her.

She recalled how her Nigerian friends always ensured she walked away from the side of the road where cars were driving, regardless of the distance or weather.

She compares Nigerian men with American suitors

According to her, the difference becomes obvious whenever an American man expresses interest in her but fails to show similar consideration.

She said, “To Nigerian woman, it’s so fascinating to me when a man, like specifically an American man, is going on and on about how much he likes me, but he doesn’t even do, like, the absolute basics.”

The woman also recalled how one of her Nigerian friends would immediately check her car whenever she mentioned having a problem with it, even asking follow-up questions to make sure everything was fine.

She added, “So when I’m talking to a guy and he says that he likes me and then I mention a little problem or something that I’m having, and he doesn’t even look for a small way to try to fix it for me, I’m like, how much do you really like me? Clearly not that much.”

‘What’s the point of you?’

The woman further said her Nigerian male friends often pay when they are buying small items such as water or drinks, something she finds noticeably different from some of her dating experiences.

She said, “In my humble opinion, as a boyfriend , potential love interest, you’re supposed to make my life better than it is already.”

She concluded that any potential partner would have to match the level of care she already receives from her friends, sparking discussion about cultural expectations, dating and the everyday gestures people associate with affection.
