Tope Alabi warns of legal action over false, defamatory claims

Gospel singer Tope Alabi has warned that she will take legal action against anyone who publishes or circulates false and defamatory claims about her.

The warning was contained in a public notice issued by her lawyers, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, which she shared on her Instagram page on Friday.

The notice, which identified her as Evangelist Patricia Temitope Alabi, said the singer had directed the firm to caution the public against publications capable of damaging her reputation.

“TAKE FURTHER NOTICE that our Client has, for almost thirty (30) years, built a reputation of integrity, honour and public trust in her personal, professional and spiritual life. That reputation is a valuable personal and professional asset, and it is protected by law,” the notice read.

The lawyers said they had become aware of statements about the singer that they considered false, misleading and injurious, and that such statements could continue to be circulated in print, broadcast, online or by word of mouth.

They warned that anyone who publishes such material, whether in writing, videos, audio recordings, social media posts, broadcasts, interviews or podcasts, could be held personally liable.

The notice also advised the public against reposting or sharing potentially defamatory content, noting that liability could extend beyond the original author.

“That liability may extend, inter alia, to the originator of the statement and to any person who repeats, republishes, reposts, shares, forwards or otherwise amplifies the same, depending on facts and any applicable legal defences,” the lawyers stated.

They added that anonymous or pseudonymous accounts offer no automatic protection from legal consequences, and that Alabi reserved the right to seek court orders to unmask those behind offending publications where legally permissible.

Those who have already published such content were directed to take it down immediately and stop further publication. The lawyers stressed that removal would not, on its own, erase liability for what had already been published.

According to the legal team, the singer has authorised them to institute proceedings, without further notice, against anyone whose conduct gives rise to an actionable claim. Possible remedies listed include damages, injunctions against further publication, court-ordered retractions, public apologies and legal costs.

The notice clarified, however, that it was not meant to stifle legitimate criticism or free speech.

“PROVIDED THAT nothing in this Notice is intended to restrict truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest, or the lawful exercise of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed by law,” it stated.

Alabi shared the notice on Instagram with the caption: “PLEASE NOTE THIS AS REGARDS ANY MALICIOUS VIDEO OR SPEECH AGAINST ME.”

The notice was dated October 23, 2026.
