“May His Soul Rest In Perfect Peace” — Family Announces Death Of Veteran Actor Francis Duru At 57 After Brief Illness

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, bringing to an end a career spanning more than three decades in the Nigerian film industry.
Duru’s family announced his death through a statement posted on his official Instagram page in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026.
“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the statement read.
“We appreciate your prayers, love, and understanding. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen.”
The family did not disclose the specific nature of the illness or provide further details surrounding his death.
His passing comes about four months after the actor publicly dismissed claims that he was battling a life-threatening illness.
In June, concerns had spread among fans and colleagues after footage showing Duru appearing frail circulated widely on social media.
Responding at the time, the actor released a video denying that he was critically ill and described the circulating footage as “fabricated and malicious.”
Duru maintained that he had never been as sick as the viral material suggested and reassured his followers that he was getting stronger.

His family’s latest statement, however, said he died following a brief illness, without indicating whether the illness was connected in any way to the health rumours he denied in June.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his primary and secondary education in Cameroon before relocating to Nigeria for university education.
He attended the University of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, where he studied Theatre Arts and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996.
Duru began his journey into the Nigerian movie industry in 1989 when he featured in Missing Mark, directed by the late Ndubuisi Oko.
Although the role did not immediately propel him to national prominence, it marked the beginning of what would become a decades-long acting career.
He gained wider recognition in the mid-1990s following his appearance in Rattlesnake, produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe.
His role as Ahanna helped establish him as one of the familiar faces of the emerging Nollywood industry and opened the way for numerous appearances in films and television productions.
Over the years, Duru built a reputation through diverse roles and became one of the veteran actors associated with Nollywood’s formative and expansion years.
His contribution to the entertainment industry also earned him several honours and recognitions.
He was named a United Nations Ambassador of Peace in recognition of his positive influence on young people.
In 2020, Duru won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa.
Beyond acting, he was involved in activities aimed at supporting younger practitioners and contributing to the development of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
Duru married his wife, Adokiye, in 2003, and the couple had four children.
The family suffered a major loss in August 2024 following the death of one of their children, Ifeanyi.
His death at 57 has added another major loss to Nollywood, with colleagues, fans and members of the entertainment community mourning an actor whose career stretched from the formative years of the Nigerian home-video industry into the modern era of Nollywood.
