Nigerian Afrobeats singer Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has explained why he prefers to keep his wealth and achievements away from public display, saying he does not want young people to feel pressured by his success.

The singer disclosed this during an interview with Jam FM, where he spoke about the influence he has on young people and his decision to maintain a relatively simple lifestyle despite his growing success in the music industry.

Rema explained that many young people, including his fans and others who admire him, see him as a source of inspiration and hope to achieve similar success in their own lives.

However, he said constantly displaying his wealth on social media could make some of them feel they are not making enough progress or are falling behind in life.

According to the singer, he is conscious of how his lifestyle may affect young people who are still working towards their personal, educational and professional goals.

Rema stressed that everyone has their own time to succeed and should not feel compelled to rush their journey because someone of a similar age is doing well.

He said some people have advised him not to worry about whether his lifestyle puts pressure on others, but he remains concerned that flaunting his wealth could be misunderstood and create unnecessary expectations among young people.

The singer said his main concern is for young people who are already struggling with pressure from society and their families to meet certain expectations.

He also pointed out that some parents contribute to this problem by comparing their children with others and pushing them towards careers they may not genuinely want to pursue.

According to him, many students end up studying courses they have little interest in because their parents want them to secure well-paying jobs.

Rema said he does not want his success to become another reason for young people to compare themselves with others or feel that they must achieve certain milestones at a particular age.

He said: “A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are my fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured.

“Everybody has their time but some people just want to rush it because they see their fellow young person doing well. Sometimes, people tell me not to care about whether my lifestyle would pressure anyone, but I still feel some people will misinterpret it if I flaunt my lifestyle.”

The singer further explained that his concern extends beyond social media, noting that parental comparisons and societal expectations also put many young people under unnecessary pressure.

He said he wants people to focus on their individual journeys rather than measure their achievements against the success of others.

Speaking about his fashion choices, Rema said he prefers simple outfits and enjoys wearing streetwear rather than constantly showing off expensive designer brands.

He added that his chains and watches are probably the most luxurious items associated with his personal style.

The Afrobeats star’s comments highlight his belief that success should not be used to make others feel inadequate, particularly young people who are still finding their direction in life.
