NELFUND Clarifies Student Loans Are Voluntary, Not Compulsory

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has clarified that applying for a student loan is voluntary and not a compulsory requirement for students seeking admission or pursuing their studies in Nigerian tertiary institutions.

The Fund stressed that the interest-free loan scheme is designed to support students who genuinely need financial assistance, particularly those struggling to pay for their education.

In a clarification issued on Wednesday, NELFUND explained that every student has the right to decide whether to apply for the loan, depending on their financial situation and personal needs.

The clarification comes amid concerns about the need for students, tertiary institutions and other stakeholders to properly understand the purpose and conditions of the Federal Government’s student loan programme.

According to the Fund, the initiative was established to remove financial barriers to higher education and ensure that qualified Nigerian students do not abandon their academic pursuits because of a lack of money.

NELFUND warned against any practice or interpretation that could make students believe they must take out a loan to study in a Nigerian tertiary institution.

The Fund maintained that compelling students who can afford their educational expenses to borrow money would undermine the purpose of the programme.

“The objective is not to encourage every student to borrow, but to ensure that every eligible Nigerian student who genuinely needs financial assistance has the opportunity to access it,” the Fund stated.

NELFUND further explained that the loan scheme is a support system for students facing financial difficulties, rather than an obligation imposed on everyone enrolled in a tertiary institution.

It added that students who can independently pay their tuition fees and other educational expenses are free to continue their studies without applying for the facility.

Students Urged to Understand Loan Repayment Conditions

While emphasising that the loan is voluntary, NELFUND reminded prospective beneficiaries that the facility comes with repayment obligations under the provisions of the Student Loans Act.

The Fund advised students to carefully review the terms and conditions of the programme before applying, stressing the importance of making informed decisions about borrowing.

Although the loans are interest-free, beneficiaries are expected to comply with the applicable repayment provisions. Students are therefore encouraged to understand their responsibilities before accepting the financial assistance.

NELFUND described the programme as an important intervention aimed at expanding access to higher education and providing opportunities for students whose academic ambitions may otherwise be limited by financial challenges.

The Fund reiterated that its priority is to ensure that no qualified Nigerian student is denied the opportunity to pursue higher education simply because of an inability to meet the cost of schooling.

NELFUND Warns Institutions Against Misleading Students

The Fund also urged tertiary institutions, student leaders and other stakeholders to provide accurate information about the loan scheme and properly guide students who may need financial assistance.

It cautioned against communicating the programme in a manner that could mislead students into believing that applying for a loan is a condition for studying at any Nigerian university, polytechnic or college of education.

According to NELFUND, eligible students who genuinely require financial support should be able to access the facility without facing unnecessary pressure or misinformation.

The Fund reaffirmed its commitment to the objectives of the Federal Government’s student loan initiative, which seeks to make higher education more accessible to Nigerians from different financial backgrounds.

The clarification was contained in a statement signed by NELFUND’s Director of Strategic Communications, Mrs Oseyemi Oluwatuyi.
