‘Hunkuyi’s comment on El-Rufai’s detention could heighten political tension’ – Ashiru

The Kaduna State gubernatorial candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Isa Mohammed Ashiru, has expressed concern over the recent comments by former Senator Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi regarding the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, warning that such remarks could heighten political tension in the state.
Abdulwaheed Olayinka Adubi, Chief Press Secretary and spokesman to Ashiru, in a statement on Tuesday, said the ADC gubernatorial candidate described as unfortunate and unhelpful the reported comment by Hunkuyi that El-Rufai should not be released until after the 2027 general elections, saying such a position could further inflame political sentiments and deepen divisions among the people of Kaduna State.
The ADC gubernatorial candidate stressed that, at a time when political stakeholders should be working towards promoting peace, unity and democratic stability, public statements capable of generating unnecessary controversy should be avoided.
According to Ashiru, the issue surrounding El-Rufai’s detention should be addressed strictly in accordance with the law and established judicial procedures, rather than being framed in a manner that suggests political considerations should determine the outcome.
He maintained that the rule of law, due process and the constitutional rights of every citizen must be respected, irrespective of political affiliation, position or personal differences.
Ashiru further cautioned political leaders against making statements that could be interpreted as an endorsement of the use of detention as a political tool, noting that the credibility of Nigeria’s democracy depends on the impartial application of the law and respect for the rights of all citizens.
He said Kaduna State, which has experienced its share of political and security challenges, requires responsible leadership and constructive engagement from all political actors, particularly as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
The ADC candidate emphasised that political disagreements should not be allowed to undermine peaceful coexistence or create an atmosphere of hostility among residents of the state.
Ashiru urged political leaders, party supporters and other stakeholders to exercise restraint in their public comments and prioritise the collective interest of Kaduna State above partisan considerations.
He reiterated that democracy thrives where opposing views are accommodated, institutions are allowed to function independently, and the law is applied fairly without fear or favour.
“The former governor’s continued detention should be addressed through the appropriate legal channels, while political leaders should refrain from making pronouncements capable of prejudging the matter or heightening public tension,” the statement said.
He called on all stakeholders to promote peace, mutual respect and political tolerance, stressing that the future of Kaduna State depends on the willingness of its leaders to place the welfare and unity of the people above narrow political interests.
