“He Called For Backup And Officers Began Harassing Us” — Court Bailiffs Raise Alarm Over Police Conduct During Judgment Execution In Anambra

Court bailiffs attached to the Chief Magistrates’ Court in Awka, Anambra State, have raised an alarm over an alleged attempt by police officers to stop them from executing a court judgment on Wednesday, October 7, 2026.
According to an account by one of the court officials, the bailiffs had gone to carry out the execution pursuant to a court warrant when a man who identified himself as the Divisional Police Officer of B Division, Anambra State, allegedly arrived at the scene and directed them to immediately stop the exercise and accompany him to the police station.
The court official said the bailiffs informed the man that they were acting pursuant to a valid court order and had the warrant authorising the execution in their possession.
He said they requested that they be allowed to complete the execution before proceeding to the police station.
“Today, being the 7th day of October 2026, we went for an execution of court judgment. A man came claiming to be the DPO of B Division, Anambra State, and asked us, the court bailiffs from the Chief Magistrates’ Court, Awka, to stop everything we were doing and head to his office at B Division,” the official alleged.

“I told him that this is a court order and that before we go with him to the station, we would have to finish the execution of the judgment because we have the warrant with us.”
According to the account, the man subsequently contacted his office and requested reinforcement, following which additional police officers allegedly arrived at the scene.
The bailiff alleged that the situation then became confrontational, claiming that the officers began harassing the court officials carrying out the execution.
“He called his office for backup, which came immediately, and they started harassing all of us who are court officials,” he alleged.
A video accompanying the account shows uniformed police officers at the scene and an exchange involving persons present during the incident. The footage, however, does not by itself establish the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation or the reasons advanced by the police for intervening.
The court officials have appealed for intervention over the incident and called for the circumstances surrounding the alleged disruption of the execution to be investigated.
They also called for the video of the encounter to receive public attention, insisting that they were acting in their official capacities pursuant to a court-issued warrant.
Details of the judgment being executed, the parties involved in the underlying case and the specific property or subject matter of the execution were not immediately available.
There was also no immediate statement from the Anambra State Police Command on the allegations or clarification on whether the officer who intervened was indeed the DPO of B Division and the basis for the police action.
