“Four FUT Minna Students, Government House Driver Killed” — Five Die In Crash Involving Niger Governor Bago’s Convoy

Five people, including four students of the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna, and a Government House driver, have died in a road accident involving a vehicle in the convoy of Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago.
The accident occurred on Monday at Gidan Mangoro in Minna, the Niger State capital, when a Toyota Hilux conveying the Director-General of the Government House, Dauda Chikuba, collided with a vehicle carrying the students.
The four students and the driver of the Government House vehicle died at the scene, while Chikuba sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
The accident occurred as the governor’s convoy was returning to Minna after a condolence visit to the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Yahaya Abubakar, following the death of Sagi Nupe, Aisha.
The vehicle conveying the students was travelling towards Bida when the collision occurred.
An eyewitness who spoke about the incident described it as a head-on collision and alleged that the governor’s convoy was travelling at high speed before the accident.
“It was a head-on collision. We learnt that the convoy was at high speed when the accident occurred. It was a terrible accident,” the eyewitness said.
However, the exact cause of the accident has not been established, and the allegation concerning the speed of the convoy remains unverified.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, Wasiu Abiodun, said the police had commenced an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision.
“The accident occurred this morning, and we are investigating it,” Abiodun said.
The police spokesperson did not disclose the identities of the deceased students or the Government House driver.
The condition of Chikuba, who was taken to a hospital following the crash, was also not immediately disclosed.
