A suspected phone snatcher has narrowly escaped being lynched after a botched attempt to steal a phone near A&C Mall in East Legon, Accra, drew a furious crowd of residents who set upon him almost immediately.
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect had been riding pillion on a motorbike when he made his move, reaching out in an attempt to grab the victim’s phone as they rode past.
The snatch, however, did not go as planned, and the intended victim managed to push him off the moving bike before he could get away with the device.
Once he hit the ground, any hope of a clean escape vanished. Residents in the area, alerted by the commotion, quickly surrounded him, and what followed was a heated and violent confrontation as the crowd vented their anger over the attempted theft.
Some motorists passing through the area are said to have joined in as well, adding to the beating before order could be restored.
The scene, captured on video by onlookers, shows a dense crowd gathered around the suspect, with tempers clearly running high in the moments following the incident.
Phone snatching along busy commercial stretches like the one near A&C Mall remains a persistent concern for residents and motorists, often fuelling exactly this kind of swift, unregulated street justice when a suspect is caught in the act.
It is not yet clear whether the man survived the assault without serious injury or whether he was eventually handed over to police for formal action.
