As the official campaigns for the 2027 governorship elections kicked off on Wednesday, candidates and their respective political parties have begun rolling out their manifestos.

From tackling insecurity to reforming the education, health and agriculture sectors, among others, the candidates are set to present their plans as Nigerians decide who will earn their votes.

In the face of the nation’s security challenges, the Nigerian Army, led by the Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has approved the redeployment of senior officers to key command, operational and staff appointments across the Service.

Also, the Dangote Refinery has alleged an abuse of power by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority over the latter’s directive to suspend propane loading and truck-out operations at the refinery. 1. 2027: Gov campaigns kick off, promises flood states

Governorship candidates and political parties across the country have begun intensifying campaigns for the 2027 elections, unveiling policy agendas centred on security, agriculture, education, healthcare, workers’ welfare and economic development.

From the North-West to the South-East and South-West, the candidates are seeking to frame the contests around competing programmes, while parties and political actors are also making early appeals for peaceful, issue-based campaigns.

The development follows the formal commencement of the governorship campaign period on Wednesday, September 9, setting the stage for a contest in which security, the economy, social services and the welfare of citizens are expected to feature prominently.

2. Shake-up: Army redeploys senior generals

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Waidi Shaibu, has approved the redeployment of senior officers to key command, operational and staff appointments across the Nigerian Army.

This, according to the service, was part of efforts to strengthen operational effectiveness and align the Service’s leadership structure with the country’s evolving security challenges.

A statement on Wednesday by the Army spokesperson, Appolonia Anele, said that under the new postings, Maj Gen I. A. Ajose moves from the Army Headquarters, Department of Army Operations, to the Theatre Command, Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, as Theatre Commander.

3. Refinery access war: Dangote, regulator clash in court

The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority and the Dangote Petroleum Refinery have clashed in court over allegations surrounding the quality and distribution of propane, with the dispute centring on the regulator’s directive to suspend propane loading and truck-out operations at the refinery.

The face-off came to a head at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday, where NMDPRA urged the court to discharge an interim order restraining it from enforcing the suspension, while Dangote accused the regulator of abusing its powers.

The court had on August 31 restrained NMDPRA, its officers, agents and representatives from entering, sealing, shutting down, restricting access to, obstructing, suspending, disrupting, inspecting, supervising or sanctioning the refinery’s operations pending the hearing and determination of the substantive application.

4. Obi Benue blockade: Police arrest 46 as condemnation mounts

The Benue State Police Command has arrested 46 people in connection with the blockade of the convoy of the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, on Tuesday.

The Commissioner of Police, Cletus Nwadiogbu, disclosed this at a press conference held in Makurdi on Wednesday.

According to the CP, the police officers deployed for the visit of the former governor of Anambra State took a professional and tactical decision to avoid an escalation that could have resulted in loss of life and destruction of property.

5. Trump offers Americans $5,000 if Republicans win midterm elections, retain Congress

US President Donald Trump has promised a $5,000 federal “dividend” to every adult American if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in November’s midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge on Wednesday at the Republican Party’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, turning an election rally into a pitch that could put billions of dollars directly into Americans’ pockets.

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them,” Trump said, adding that he would issue the payment “to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000.”
