Niger Bridge: ‘Umahi Has Taken Sycophancy Too Far’ — ADC Chieftain

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Anambra State, Ndubuisi Nwobu, has criticised Works Minister Dave Umahi over the directive to decorate the First Niger Bridge with photographs of President Bola Tinubu.

Nwobu, in a statement on Thursday, described the directive as “sycophancy taken too far,” questioning the decision to publicly associate the President’s photographs with the rehabilitation of public infrastructure.

According to him, the funds used for maintaining and rehabilitating the bridge are public resources and do not belong personally to Tinubu.

“The Minister of Works’ directive for the First Niger Bridge to be decorated with President Tinubu’s photographs is sycophancy taken too far,” Nwobu said.

He argued that the rehabilitation of the bridge should be viewed as a government responsibility rather than a personal achievement of the President.

“The money used in the maintenance of the bridge is not Tinubu’s personal money. The money belongs to the entire citizens of this country,” he added.

Nwobu also argued that displaying Tinubu’s photographs on the bridge would not determine how Nigerians vote in the 2027 general election.

He maintained that voters would ultimately decide their preferred candidates at the polls, regardless of political displays associated with government projects.

The controversy follows Umahi’s reported directive that photographs of President Tinubu be placed on the First Niger Bridge following the completion of rehabilitation work.
