Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned the alleged assault of one of its students by a woman after a video of the incident at a private hostel surfaced online.

The footage, which circulated on social media on Friday, showed a middle-aged woman grabbing, pushing and repeatedly hitting a female student during a confrontation inside a hostel room.

The identities of the woman and the student, as well as the circumstances that led to the altercation, were initially unclear.

In the video, the student could be heard pleading with the woman to stop as another person filming the incident attempted to intervene. The woman was also heard speaking in Yoruba and directing the student to sit down.

An X user, #AdegbolaJohn3, who shared the footage, alleged that the woman had followed her daughter to the university hostel before assaulting her daughter’s roommate.

The post called on Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Vice-Chancellor of LASU and the state Commissioner for Education to intervene.

The allegation could not be independently verified.

However, LASU confirmed that the incident involved one of its students and said the matter had been reported to the police and addressed through the appropriate authorities.

According to a report by Punch, the university’s Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Oluwayemisi A. Thomas-Onashile in a statement signed by said the incident involved students of its College of Medicine, LASUCOM, Ikeja.

The university clarified that the confrontation occurred at a privately owned hostel outside the university’s campus.

“The attention of Lagos State University has been drawn to a trending video concerning an incident involving a parent and a student of the University.”

According to the institution, the assaulted student promptly reported the matter to the police, while the university has also commenced its internal disciplinary procedures.

“Nevertheless, the University has initiated due disciplinary processes in line with its established rules and regulations.”

LASU said it “unequivocally condemns this act of violence in the strongest terms,” stressing that “any form of assault, intimidation, or harassment of students, staff, or visitors, whether within or outside the University premises, is unacceptable and goes against the core values upon which this institution was founded.”

The university further reminded its students of the expectation to be “worthy in character and learning,” in keeping with its commitment to producing graduates who excel “both academically and morally.”

LASU urged students to act responsibly, prioritise their safety and report concerns to the appropriate authorities.

It also called on parents to “support the University’s mission by engaging constructively, respecting institutional boundaries, and encouraging their wards to uphold discipline and integrity.”

The institution reaffirmed its commitment to student welfare and safety, saying, “LASU remains committed to safeguarding the well-being, safety, and academic success of every student, and will continue to provide a secure and conducive learning environment.”
