Elderly Woman Heavily Disgraced, ‘Dragged In The Mud’ After Being Caught Stealing Notebooks, Pens and Other School Supplies

An elderly woman has been caught in the act of stealing school supplies, including notebooks, stockings, crayons, pens, and pencils, from a stationery shop in Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, in an incident that has since drawn a wave of mixed reactions online.

According to accounts of the incident, shop staff or nearby witnesses spotted her attempting to make away with the items before she could leave the premises undetected.

Once confronted, she reportedly showed visible signs of remorse, going as far as kneeling down to apologise for what she had done.

It remains unclear at this time whether formal charges have been filed against her or whether the matter was resolved informally between her and the shop owner.

The nature of the stolen items, largely school-related supplies, has led many commenting on the incident to speculate that she may have been attempting to provide for her children’s education, though this has not been confirmed.

The incident has sparked considerable debate online, with reactions ranging from sympathy over the economic pressures many parents continue to face in affording basic school supplies, to firmer views insisting that hardship, however real, does not excuse theft.
