Vice President Kashim Shettima has commenced a two-week leave approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, marking his first official break since assuming office in May 2023.

The Office of the Vice President disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications.

According to the statement, Shettima will use the period for study, reflection and intellectual renewal as part of efforts to enhance his capacity for continued service to Nigeria.

The leave, which began on Thursday, August 6, will also provide the Vice President an opportunity to review ongoing government programmes, examine emerging national and global policy issues and prepare for future responsibilities under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement noted that since taking office, Shettima has played key roles in coordinating and supervising government initiatives, particularly in economic development, food security, humanitarian affairs, digital transformation, job creation and regional cooperation.

It added that the Vice President has continued to chair the National Economic Council (NEC), which comprises the governors of the 36 states, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and other relevant government officials.

The council is responsible for deliberating on economic policies and issues affecting the welfare of Nigerians.

The statement also highlighted Shettima’s role in representing President Tinubu at major international and regional engagements, where he has advanced Nigeria’s interests in areas including economic integration, peace and security, climate action, investment and sustainable development.

According to the statement, “Senator Shettima remains deeply committed to the ideals of loyalty, duty and service that have defined his role in the administration, as well as to supporting President Tinubu’s efforts to build a more secure, productive and prosperous Nigeria.”

The Vice President is expected to resume official duties after the two-week period with what the statement described as renewed energy and dedication to national service.
