Oyo Begins House-to-House Waste Bin Enforcement, Sets Sept. 1 Compliance Deadline

The Oyo State Government has announced the commencement of house-to-house enforcement of its mandatory waste bin policy, giving residents and property owners until September 1, 2026, to comply.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said every residential and commercial property across the state must provide designated waste bins suitable for the size of the building, the number of occupants and the volume of waste generated.

He said the directive applies to households, residential buildings, business premises, shopping complexes and plazas.

The government also directed residents and businesses to patronise only government-accredited Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste collection and evacuation, while ensuring they remain up to date with monthly waste disposal payments.

According to the commissioner, enforcement teams will verify evidence of payment during inspections.

He warned that anyone engaging unapproved waste contractors or disposing of waste through unauthorised means would face sanctions in accordance with the law.

The government urged residents experiencing challenges with waste collection services or seeking information on accredited PSP operators to contact the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority (OYOWMA) or the Department of Environmental Health Services in the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

The enforcement exercise is scheduled to take effect on September 1, 2026.
