Former FIFA vice president Prince Ali bin Al Hussein has said the Jordan Football Association (FA) will not support Gianni Infantino’s bid to continue as FIFA president, despite the football body releasing funds owed to Jordan’s national team and coaching staff.

Prince Ali, in a statement shared via his X handle on Thursday, August 6, acknowledged the payment made by FIFA to the Jordan team following their run to the final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar last December.

He said the funds, which were meant for the players and technical crew, should have been paid eight months earlier.

“Thank you to the FIFA administration for suddenly this morning delivering what was owed to our players and coaching staff, for the Jordan National team’s accession to the final of the FIFA Arab Cup in Qatar last December,” Prince Ali wrote.

“This was funding that should have been received 8 months ago.”

While describing the development as positive for the team, the former FIFA presidential candidate said the payment did not address broader concerns surrounding FIFA’s leadership and past experiences of football associations.

“While this is a good development for our players, it does not change the serious concerns we in the football world have regarding the FIFA leadership, nor does it change what our FAs have been subjected to in the past,” he said.

Prince Ali added that the situation reflected wider challenges faced by football associations, particularly around FIFA presidential elections.

“It is symptomatic of those exact difficulties that we all face, and that are usually linked to the FIFA presidential elections,” he stated.

Reaffirming his stance on Infantino’s leadership, Prince Ali said the Jordan FA would not endorse the FIFA president or support his re-election bid.

“And it does not change my clear position concerning the leadership of FIFA: my FA and I will not endorse president Infantino, nor will we vote for him,” he added.

Prince Ali, who served as FIFA vice president from 2011 to 2016, challenged Infantino in the 2016 FIFA presidential election but lost to the Swiss-Italian administrator. Infantino has remained FIFA president since then.
