Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has warned local government chairmen and senior officials against absenteeism after finding several council officials absent from their offices during an unscheduled inspection of six local government areas.

The governor issued the warning during visits to Kiyawa, Jahun, Miga, Kafin Hausa, Auyo and Hadejia local government areas.

The inspection began at the Kiyawa Local Government Secretariat at about 11:36am, where the governor reportedly found several political and senior administrative officials absent.

Similar situations were recorded at Jahun and Miga, where chairmen, vice chairmen, secretaries, directors and heads of departments were not available at their duty posts.

Namadi expressed disappointment over the development, questioning how local governments could effectively serve residents when officials responsible for their administration were absent.

He stressed that local government is the closest level of government to the people and urged council chairmen to remain physically present to listen to residents, identify their challenges and provide solutions.

The governor said he would summon the affected officials and take necessary action to end what he described as a culture of absenteeism in the councils.

Namadi had similarly warned Jigawa’s 27 local government chairmen against absenteeism when they were inaugurated in 2025.

During the inspection, the governor also visited Kafin Hausa, where he inspected projects at the state university, including the Faculty of Medical Sciences, a 480-bed female students’ hostel, the Centre for Wetland Research and staff quarters.

He commended the university management for the progress recorded but expressed concern over the quality of renovation work at the Science Secondary School staff quarters.

The governor directed that the project be completed according to the standard and specifications contained in the contract.

Namadi also inspected roads, markets, schools and health facilities across the councils, including the General Hospital Hadejia and the new modern market.

He said his administration’s 12-point development agenda would remain focused on projects capable of directly improving the lives of residents.

The governor’s latest inspection underscores his administration’s renewed emphasis on accountability and physical presence among local government officials.

For residents who rely on council authorities for basic services, the governor’s message was clear: elected and appointed officials must remain accessible, accountable and physically present in the communities they are responsible for serving.
