Japanese Ambassador’s Cup: Karate Federation

The 5th Japanese Ambassador’s Cup Karate Tournament has concluded at the Velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday, with the Karate Federation of Nigeria (KFN) describing the competition as a significant step forward in the development of the sport and the strengthening of Nigeria-Japan relations.

The three-day championship, held from August 20 to 22, 2026, brought together cadet, junior and senior karatekas for competition, while also providing a platform to promote the values of discipline, integrity, respect and perseverance associated with the Japanese martial art.

The President of the Karate Federation of Nigeria, Dr Chukwudi Dimkpa, welcomed athletes, officials and dignitaries to the championship, stressing that karate was more than a sporting contest.

“Karate started in Japan, so this is not just a tournament. It showcases and instills what we have learned over the years: discipline and integrity,” Dimkpa said.

He urged athletes to conduct themselves with discipline and sportsmanship throughout the championship, while expressing confidence that the competition would provide a safe and fair environment for all participants.

The KFN president also said this year’s edition demonstrated the federation’s steady growth, noting that the tournament attracted better attendance than the fourth edition held last year.

According to him, the federation had to use a hall for last year’s competition, whereas the fifth edition was staged at the larger Velodrome, which he described as evidence of the tournament’s increasing profile.

“So far, so good. We’ve had the weigh-ins earlier in the week and all the different committees, which has culminated in where we are right now. It’s been good,” he said.

Dimkpa further highlighted the importance of the partnership between the Embassy of Japan and the KFN, saying the federation appreciated Japan’s contribution to the development of karate in Nigeria.

He called for deeper collaboration that would provide Nigerian athletes with more opportunities to develop, compete and showcase their abilities internationally.

Against the backdrop of concerns over spectator turnout at the tournament, Dimkpa disclosed that the KFN board had approved the establishment of a Nigerian Karate League.

He explained that the proposed league would feature a round-robin format involving karatekas throughout the year, with the aim of creating sustained competition, attracting sponsorship and improving the visibility of the sport.

“Once you have something going on all year round, that attracts the spectators you’re looking for. The sponsors will also come in, and that visibility also gives the sport the viability it needs,” he said.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Japanese Ambassador to Nigeria, Suzuki Hideo, described the fifth edition as an important milestone in the sporting relationship between the two countries.

Suzuki said the tournament had evolved into an important gathering for Nigeria’s karate community while also strengthening friendship between Japan and Nigeria through sport.

He commended the Karate Federation of Nigeria and the Embassy of Japan for their collaboration in sustaining the event and congratulated the athletes for their dedication, training and perseverance.

The ambassador emphasised that karate should not be viewed merely as a contest of physical strength.

According to him, the martial art teaches discipline, respect, self-control, perseverance and continuous self-improvement — values he said were equally important beyond the sporting arena.

Suzuki also described sport as an effective instrument of diplomacy, noting that shared sporting interests could help people from different countries build relationships beyond language and cultural differences.

He expressed hope that the tournament would continue to expand and inspire more young Nigerians to take up karate, while producing athletes capable of representing Nigeria on the international stage.

Among the athletes who expressed satisfaction with their performances was Mariam Gimba, who competed in the senior kata category.

Gimba said she was delighted with her performance, describing it as one of her best outings in the category in recent times.

“It feels very good. I feel very happy and very excited,” she said, adding that she had competed in the senior kata category for some time.

The athlete promised to maintain her momentum through continued training.

“I’m going to keep on training very hard to keep my position in the category I’m in,” she said.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s No. 1 male karate player, Olorulbe Oluwaseun, said maintaining his position at the top had required consistency, hard work and support from his coach and teammates.

“It is very easy to climb up, but it’s not easy to stay up. It takes consistency and hard work,” Oluwaseun said.

He credited his continued success to his coach and teammates, while identifying technical improvement and a deeper understanding of kata as key elements of his development.

According to him, athletes must focus on mastering the correct techniques and continually work towards perfection.

The fifth Japanese Ambassador’s Cup thus ended with renewed calls for greater investment, increased competition and stronger institutional support for karate, as the KFN seeks to build on the growth recorded at this year’s championship and further strengthen the Nigeria-Japan sporting partnership.

The tournament also formed part of Nigeria’s competitive pathway ahead of the 2026 African Karate Championship in Algiers, Algeria, scheduled for September 6–13.
