Armed gunmen have attacked Abugi, Kuchinda and Mikugi communities in Kupa Kingdom, Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State, in what the state government described as a reprisal attack.
The incident, which reportedly led to the loss of lives, followed the alleged killing of a herder by a local vigilante member over suspicion of cattle rustling.
Meanwhile, the Kogi State Government has condemned the attacks, describing them as tragic, senseless and unacceptable.
In a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the government said the reprisal attack targeted innocent residents of the affected communities, heightening tension in the area.
Fanwo said Governor Usman Ododo has expressed condolences to the bereaved families and directed security agencies to immediately restore calm, take control of the situation and apprehend those responsible for the killings.
He added that the vigilante member allegedly linked to the death of the herder, as well as those behind the reprisal attack, would be brought to justice.
The government appealed for calm, urging residents to avoid further retaliation and provide security agencies with credible information as investigations continue.
It also reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property while promoting peaceful coexistence across Kogi State.
