Defender Nico Elvedi – The Trumpet Newspaper Nigeria

Leeds United have reached an agreement to sign Swiss international defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Mönchengladbach for a fee worth up to £8.5 million.

The 29-year-old is expected in England on Monday to undergo a medical before completing the move to Elland Road.

Mönchengladbach have accepted an initial £6.8 million fee, with a further £1.7 million potentially payable in add-ons.

Elvedi is set to bring considerable experience to Leeds after spending 11 years with the German Bundesliga club. He made 364 appearances for Mönchengladbach, including 17 in the Champions League.

The versatile defender has also earned 73 international caps for Switzerland and was part of the country’s squad at this summer’s World Cup.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke remained cautious when asked about the transfer following his side’s 4-0 pre-season victory over Augsburg.

Farke said deals are only complete once medical examinations and paperwork have been finalised, although he acknowledged that the club expected developments within 48 hours.

Elvedi’s arrival could pave the way for Leeds defender Sebastiaan Bornauw to join Hamburg on an initial loan deal that could include an option to buy.

Leeds are preparing for their return to the Premier League and will begin their campaign away to Nottingham Forest next Saturday.
