A man has been caught on camera dumping rubbish at the Ashaiman Overhead, an area increasingly turning into an informal dumping ground, before being confronted and physically assaulted by local “area boys” who caught him in the act.
Footage from the scene shows the man visibly distressed and panting for breath following the confrontation, as bystanders look on.
Onlookers who shared the video pointed to the broader consequences of such dumping, noting that indiscriminate waste disposal in the area is a key driver of the flooding that regularly plagues Ashaiman during the rainy season.
Ashaiman has long been one of Greater Accra’s most flood-prone areas, with blocked drains and waste-choked streams repeatedly linked to devastating floods in the municipality over the years, including a catastrophic 2010 flood that killed 17 people.
The Ashaiman Municipal Assembly has continued to appeal to residents to stop dumping waste into drains, warning that clogged drainage systems worsen flooding and even contribute to infrastructure damage during heavy rains.
While frustration over illegal dumping is understandable given its role in the area’s flood risk, the resort to physical assault by residents highlights the ongoing tension between community anger and the lack of consistent formal enforcement against environmental offenders in the area.
