Gov Alia pledges full support as Nigerian Army establishes 5 Division in Benue

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has assured the Nigerian Army of the state government’s full cooperation and support for the establishment of the newly approved military formations in Benue.
The governor gave the assurance on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, when he hosted members of the Army Headquarters Implementation Committee at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi.
Governor Alia said the establishment of the new formations, particularly the headquarters of the 5 Division, would significantly boost security operations and strengthen the state’s capacity to protect lives and property.
He pledged that the state government would make land available for the various approved military formations and units, while also providing necessary logistical support to facilitate their effective take-off.
Alia expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the new Army formations and choosing Benue as the headquarters of the 5 Division.
He also commended the Chief of Army Staff and other senior officers of the Nigerian Army for supporting the establishment of the division in the state.
According to the governor, the increased military presence is coming at a critical time, given the prolonged security challenges confronting communities across Benue.
He expressed optimism that the 5 Division and other military units would contribute significantly to improving security, restoring confidence among residents and creating a safer environment across the state.
Governor Alia also honoured the memory of military personnel who had paid the ultimate price in the service of the nation, while commending troops and other security personnel currently operating in Benue for their commitment to protecting residents.
He further congratulated Major General M. K. Gara on his appointment as the pioneer General Officer Commanding of the 5 Division and assured him that the Benue State Government would maintain a strong partnership with the Army.
The Army Headquarters Implementation Committee is currently in Benue to commence arrangements for the implementation of the Federal Government’s approval for the establishment of the new formations and units.
The committee’s visit is expected to accelerate preparations for the operationalisation of the 5 Division headquarters and other approved military installations across the state.
The delegation was led by Major General Raymond T. Utsaha and included the pioneer General Officer Commanding of the 5 Division, Major General M. K. Gara.
