The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has declared July 15 as “National Football Teams Day” to commemorate the country’s dramatic 2026 World Cup semi-final victory over England.

Argentina secured a place in the World Cup final after coming from behind to defeat England 2-1 in a tense encounter in Atlanta, ending the Three Lions’ hopes of reaching their first final since 1966.

England took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, putting Thomas Tuchel’s side ahead after a closely contested battle. However, Argentina mounted a late comeback, scoring in the 85th and 92nd minutes to complete a stunning turnaround and seal victory.

The result marked another significant chapter in the long-running football rivalry between the two nations, coming 40 years after Argentina’s controversial quarter-final win over England at the 1986 World Cup.

The fixture also revived political tensions between both countries after Argentine players celebrated the victory while holding a banner that read: “Las Malvinas son Argentinas,” meaning “The Falklands are Argentine.”

The Falkland Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the south-west Atlantic Ocean, remain disputed by Argentina, which continues to claim sovereignty over the islands.

The dispute dates back to 1982 when Argentina, under the military rule of General Leopoldo Galtieri, invaded the islands located about 300 miles off its eastern coast.

The ensuing war lasted 74 days between April and June that year, resulting in the deaths of 655 Argentine and 255 British servicemen, as well as three Falkland Islanders.

A 2013 referendum saw 99.8 per cent of Falkland Islanders vote to remain a British territory.

Despite their semi-final triumph over England, Argentina failed to lift the 2026 World Cup trophy after losing 1-0 to Spain in the final. England later defeated France 6-4 to secure third place in the tournament.
