Ex-Kano LG Chairman Returns to Tailoring

Former Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Area in Kano State, Abdullahi Gali Shitu, popularly known as Comrade Abdullahi Gali Basaf, has resumed his tailoring business full-time following his removal from office by a court judgment, describing the profession as more dependable than politics.
Basaf, who served as Kumbotso LG chairman until March 2026, said his return to tailoring is meant to encourage politicians to have a sustainable means of livelihood outside public office and to view politics as a platform for service rather than a permanent career.
According to him, tailoring played a significant role in financing his political journey and remains a dependable source of income.
“Tailoring is not a small trade. It is a major profession that sustains livelihoods. Even while I was in politics, my tailoring business helped me fund my campaigns and support my activities,” he said.
The former council chairman currently operates a tailoring workshop in Sheka Ward, where about 20 people are employed. He revealed plans to expand the business into a garment manufacturing company capable of creating more than 50 jobs.
“My ambition is to modernise tailoring, establish a garment company, and provide employment opportunities for at least 50 people. I want to contribute meaningfully to economic development,” Basaf said.
He urged young Nigerians to embrace vocational skills and stop looking down on skilled trades, stressing that such professions offer long-term financial security.
“Value your trade above politics because it can sustain you and even support your political ambitions,” he advised.
Despite holding both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science, Basaf said he pursued tailoring out of passion rather than seeking conventional white-collar employment.
His political career has been closely associated with the Kwankwasiyya movement. He founded Kwankwasiyya Reporters in 2015, served as chairman of the Alliance National Party in Kano State, contested for the Kano Central Senatorial seat in 2019, and later joined the NNPP, where he worked as Senior Special Assistant on Information.
Basaf won the Kumbotso Local Government chairmanship election in 2024. However, in March 2026, the Kano State High Court nullified his Certificate of Return and declared Ali Musa, popularly known as Hardworker, as the duly elected chairman.
Reflecting on life after leaving office, Basaf described tailoring as a profession that offers lasting value.
“Politics can change overnight. You may be in office today and out tomorrow. But tailoring remains. It feeds you, supports your family, and enables you to help others,” he said.
Although he has returned fully to his tailoring business, Basaf maintained that he remains interested in public service and will continue to participate in politics while building his enterprise.
