Commonwealth Games: Nigeria’s Medal Haul Rises to 14, Holds Fifth Spot

Team Nigeria maintained fifth position on the medals table at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow after Wednesday’s events, with a total haul of 14 medals comprising seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

The latest medal breakdown released by Team Nigeria showed the country’s success has come across four sports—para powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics and para athletics—with Esther Nworgu, Onome Didih and Goodness Nwachukwu among the standout performers.

Para powerlifting accounted for the largest share of Nigeria’s medals, producing six medals comprising three gold, two silver and one bronze.

Esther Nworgu won gold in the women’s lightweight (up to 61kg), while Esther Oyema secured silver in the same event. Roland Ezuruike claimed silver in the men’s lightweight (up to 72kg), Owolabi Oluwafemiayo won gold in the women’s heavyweight (over 61kg), Rita Ferdinand added silver in the women’s heavyweight event, while Riluwan Idris clinched gold in the men’s heavyweight (over 72kg).

Nigeria’s weightlifters also delivered an impressive performance, winning four medals made up of three gold and one silver.

Edidiong Umoafia claimed gold in the men’s 71kg category, Onome Didih emerged champion in the women’s 53kg division, Lawal Rofiat secured gold in the women’s 58kg event, while Ruth Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg competition.

In athletics, Nigeria has so far won three medals.

Jessica Oji earned silver in the women’s shot put, while Kayinsola Ajayi claimed bronze in the men’s 100 metres. Temitope Adeshina also finished with bronze in the women’s high jump.

Nigeria’s final gold medal came in para athletics, where Goodness Nwachukwu won the women’s F42-44/F61-64 event to further boost the country’s medal tally.

Australia continues to lead the overall standings with 47 gold, 21 silver and 35 bronze medals for a total of 103 medals. Canada is second with 14 gold medals, while England and Scotland occupy third and fourth places respectively, leaving Nigeria in fifth with seven gold, five silver and two bronze medals after six days of competition.
