‘Keyboard Warriors’ – Police Warn Against Sharing Unverified Security Information

The Nigeria Police Force (NGF) has cautioned media practitioners, social media users and members of the public against spreading unverified information capable of undermining national security efforts and ongoing operations by security agencies.

The Force Public Relations Officer, Iniedu Anietie Okokon, gave the warning while stressing the need for responsible communication and public support for security operations across the country.

Okokon said the sensitive nature of security operations often required discretion and restraint rather than the release of unverified or misleading information.

“I would prefer to maintain operational silence rather than disseminate false information,” he said.

He explained that security agencies were involved in extensive tactical deployments and strategic operations which may not always be visible to the public.

The police spokesperson criticised what he described as the growing influence of “keyboard warriors” who comment on sensitive security matters without adequate knowledge of operational realities.

He said such comments could distort public understanding and compromise ongoing efforts to combat crime and protect citizens.

Okokon added that many critics were unaware of the daily sacrifices made by officers of the Nigeria Police Force in maintaining public order and safeguarding lives and property.

He urged journalists, media organisations and digital content creators to recognise their role in strengthening national security through responsible reporting and fact-based discourse.

“The media and communication stakeholders have a critical role to play in national security. Do not allow your platform to be weaponized for the propagation of subversive ideology or dissident narratives,” he said.

The police said the warning became necessary amid the rapid spread of unverified information on social media, particularly on security-related issues.

The Force reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and urged Nigerians to verify information before sharing it.
