Five Princes Nominated for Awujale Throne as Ijebu Kingmakers Begin Succession Process
The Ilamuren kingmakers in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, have submitted the names of five princes for consideration in the selection of a new Awujale of Ijebuland.
The nomination was approved by the kingmakers under the leadership of the Olisa of Ijebu-Ode, Rasheed Adeoye Adesanya, who formally communicated the decision to Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State.
According to a letter addressed to the governor, the kingmakers acted in accordance with Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957 and the customary procedures governing the succession to the revered Awujale throne.
The five nominees forwarded to the state government are Prince Ademorin Aliu Kuye, Prince Isiaq Ayodele Adewale Adekoya, popularly known as Eleruja, Prince Onabanjo Abimbola John, Prince Oluwaseun Waheed Omopenu Onanuga, and Prince Olabode Onanuga.
Adesanya explained that, as the head of the Ilamuren-in-Council and chief kingmaker, he convened several meetings to deliberate on the process of selecting a new monarch for Ijebuland.
He noted that the declaration guiding the succession process requires the kingmakers to either unanimously choose a candidate or forward preferred candidates to the state government for a final decision.
“In line with the declaration, we have submitted the names of five candidates to the government for consideration and review,” the letter stated.
The Olisa added that the declaration made under the Chiefs Law and the customary regulations governing the Awujale chieftaincy was attached to the correspondence sent to the governor.
He further stressed that the nominations were made in the best interest of Ijebu-Ode and in compliance with Ogun State’s chieftaincy laws.
According to him, the selected princes possess the experience, background, and qualities necessary to advance the development and prestige of Ijebuland, Ogun State, and Nigeria as a whole.
Adesanya also expressed optimism for the continued prosperity of Ogun State and the enduring progress and greatness of Ijebuland.
