FG Approves ₦83.2bn for Nationwide Flood Control
The administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved ₦83.2 billion to address flooding across the country through the National Economic Council (NEC).
The decision was reached at a NEC meeting held on Thursday at the State House, Abuja, chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
State governors confirmed that the fund, drawn from the Anticipatory Action Trust Fund, was reduced from an initial proposal of over ₦166 billion. It will be used for flood prevention and response measures, including early warning systems, emergency preparedness, and other mitigation projects.
Officials said the initiative reflects a shift in NEC’s approach from reacting to disasters to preventing them, especially as seasonal flooding continues to displace residents, destroy farmlands, and damage infrastructure across Nigeria.
Shettima said the reform agenda of the current administration must deliver visible results, stressing that government efforts should improve lives, support vulnerable citizens, and strengthen economic production.
He also urged a shift away from reliance on raw material exports, calling for stronger value chains that connect agriculture, manufacturing, and global markets.
The NEC said the new funding is part of broader efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness, improve social protection, and boost national resilience against environmental challenges.
