The Unubiko Foundation, led by Chief Chijioke James Ume, Ike Abam, has commenced the construction of a 500-seat civic centre at Amaelu Abam, the ancestral headquarters of the Abam clan in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State.
The groundbreaking ceremony, which took place on Friday, marks another development initiative by the foundation aimed at improving community infrastructure and promoting cultural activities across Abam.
The ceremony was performed by the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, Engr. Christopher Okoro Kalu, who represented the foundation’s founder, Chief Ume.
Speaking at the event, Kalu assured the community that construction would be completed on schedule, adding that the facility would be officially commissioned on December 26, 2026.
He explained that the 500-capacity civic centre would serve as a central venue for cultural festivals, social gatherings, community meetings and other development-related activities among the people of Abam Onyerubi.
The rector described Chief Ume as a committed philanthropist who had consistently demonstrated interest in the development and welfare of his people.
According to him, the Unubiko Foundation has continued to support human capital development, infrastructure projects and other community advancement programmes across Abam, Arochukwu Local Government Area and beyond.
Meanwhile, Ndi Ezego Abam, traditional title holders and other community stakeholders praised Chief Ume for his contributions to the growth and development of the area.
They described the construction of the civic centre as a significant and timely intervention, noting that Amaelu Abam, being the ancestral headquarters of the clan, deserved a befitting facility for preserving its cultural heritage and hosting important community events.
The traditional title holders and other stakeholders also pledged their support for the successful completion of the project, as well as other development programmes being undertaken by the foundation.
They further offered prayers for God’s continued blessings, protection and strength for Chief Ume and the Unubiko Foundation.
The groundbreaking ceremony attracted traditional rulers, community leaders, women and youth groups, as well as other residents, many of whom expressed excitement over the commencement of the project.
The Unubiko Foundation, through the leadership of Chief Ume, has undertaken several community development initiatives in recent years.
These interventions include road maintenance and rehabilitation support, educational assistance, medical outreaches and empowerment programmes aimed at improving the living conditions of residents across Abam communities.
The 500-seat civic centre is expected to further strengthen community engagement, provide a suitable space for cultural activities and support the preservation of the heritage and traditions of the Abam people.
