Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has increased the monthly allowance paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from ₦10,000 to ₦20,000.

The governor also approved a one-time cash gift of ₦30,000 for each of the 1,523 corps members participating in the 2026 Batch C Stream Two orientation exercise in the state.

Aliyu announced the incentives on Saturday while declaring open the NYSC orientation course at the temporary orientation camp located at the College of Administrative and Business Studies, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Farfaru Campus, Sokoto.

The governor said the decision to double the monthly allowance was part of his administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of corps members and supporting young Nigerians serving in the state.

He also addressed outstanding state allowances owed to some corps members, disclosing that a committee had been established to review the unpaid entitlements following an appeal by the NYSC State Coordinator.

However, he directed that the payment of the newly increased monthly allowance should begin immediately.

In addition to the financial incentives, Aliyu donated a brand-new Hilux vehicle to the NYSC State Coordinator for official duties.

He also ordered the immediate repair of water and electricity facilities at the temporary orientation camp to ensure a more comfortable environment for the corps members throughout their three-week orientation exercise.

The governor further approved the slaughter of five cows daily during the orientation programme to ensure adequate feeding for all participants.

As part of activities lined up for the swearing-in ceremony, Aliyu announced cash prizes of ₦1 million for winners of the crocodile race, while runners-up would receive ₦500,000.

He urged the corps members to respect the rules and regulations guiding the NYSC scheme, remain disciplined and uphold the values of national unity, patriotism and selfless service.

Aliyu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development, national integration and the welfare of corps members posted to Sokoto State.

He also assured the participants that the state remained peaceful and welcoming, promising that his government would provide adequate security and a conducive environment for them to serve and contribute to national development.

Speaking at the ceremony, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Tyoyer Gabriel, disclosed that 1,523 corps members had reported to the orientation camp out of the 2,100 allocated to Sokoto State.

Gabriel commended the state government for its continued support for the NYSC scheme, particularly its efforts towards renovating the permanent orientation camp in Wamakko.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board in Sokoto State and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Almustapha Sidi, congratulated the corps members on their successful mobilisation.

He encouraged them to remain focused, disciplined and committed to the objectives of the national service programme.

Sidi also assured the participants that adequate security and welfare arrangements had been put in place to protect them throughout their stay in the state.

Highlights of the ceremony included a parade, the administration of the oath of allegiance to the corps members and other activities marking the commencement of the orientation exercise.
