ADC vows legal action over attacks on Atiku’s supporters

The ADC Campaign Council in Kebbi says it will not retaliate over attacks on its supporters during the Nov. 5 visit of its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC), however, said it would seek redress in a competent court of law.
The council’s Director-General, Alhaji Sani Tadurga, stated this on Sunday at a news conference in Birnin Kebbi.
“We will not respond to violence with violence. We will respond through the law, the courts and the power of the people,” he said.
Tadurga said the party’s supporters showed restraint in spite of being attacked and refused to be provoked.
He alleged that about 20 vehicles belonging to members and supporters were damaged, while some supporters sustained machete cuts to the head and others were flogged with sticks.
Tadurga added that phones and bags belonging to female members were also forcefully seized.
“We seek justice, not revenge. The party will not resort to vigilante action or public naming of suspects for now.
“The party has video footage and other evidence, and those allegedly involved have been identified.
“The evidence would be submitted to the appropriate authorities,” he said.
Tadurga said the council would pursue legal action against those found responsible and petition authorities over the alleged denial of campaign venues, reported double permits and interference with access to traditional rulers.
He added that the party would bring the matter to the attention of relevant national and international democratic institutions.
The ADC chieftain said the council welcomed Amnesty International’s reported condemnation of the violence after it reviewed video footage.
He also called on the police and other security agencies to remain impartial and explain the measures taken to protect the campaign convoy, supporters and journalists.
Tadurga alleged that stones were thrown at vehicles and people at the residence of the party’s governorship candidate, Mr Abubakar Malami (SAN), and that security operatives intervened to prevent escalation.
He further alleged that thugs were stationed around the Argungu residence of the deputy governorship candidate, Dr Musa Zagi.
He accused the state government of denying the party the use of the Race Course and Haliru Abdu Stadium for its rally, and of directing the Emirs to go on a three-day vacation to avoid receiving Atiku.
In spite of the incidents, the D-G described the rally as a success, saying: “Residents turned out in large numbers to receive our presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.”
