PRP: Nigeria must not treat citizens as hostages over political expression

The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has condemned the reported arrest of youths in Borno State for wearing T-shirts with political messages. It warned that Nigeria must not reach a point where citizens are detained for expressing their political views.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Muhammed Ishaq, the party said the opposition coalition would take up the matter.

“Nigeria must not become a country where citizens are treated as hostages and released only when political conditions are met,” the statement said.

The party said the coalition was concerned about how citizens were being treated over political expression.

The reaction followed a visit by the PRP National Chairman, Dr Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, and other coalition leaders to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate and former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. According to the statement, they met Atiku and members of his campaign council at his residence on Tuesday.

The PRP described the meeting as a source of “tremendous inspiration” to the delegation. It added that the coalition would continue engagements with other party leaders and candidates.

The party said leaders of the coalition parties, and others interested in joining, recognised the need to broaden and strengthen the coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It said the planned engagements were aimed at building a broader political platform capable of challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
