“We carried TV, Freezer…” — Friends reclaim wedding gifts after groom quits club two weeks after marriage

A social media post has sparked reactions after an X user narrated how members of a friends’ club allegedly reclaimed wedding gifts from a member who left the group shortly after getting married.
According to the user, the friends formed the club earlier in the year and agreed that whenever a member got married, the group would support him with a 32-inch smart television, a deep freezer and a washing machine.
Groom leaves club after receiving gifts
The user said the first member of the club got married in April, prompting the other members to fulfil their agreement.
They reportedly contributed money, purchased the three items and presented them to the newly married member.
However, the situation changed about two weeks after the wedding when the man allegedly announced that he was no longer interested in remaining in the club.
He subsequently left the group’s WhatsApp platform.
The X user said the other members decided to visit his home the following weekend without informing him beforehand.
According to the account, they took back the television, deep freezer and washing machine they had presented to him as wedding gifts.
“We carried away the TV, deep freezer, and washing machine and left,” the user wrote.
Social media users react
The incident has generated mixed reactions, with some users supporting the club members’ decision while others criticised the manner in which the items were retrieved.
T—Empire shared a personal experience involving a similar group arrangement, saying their mother had contributed more than ₦300,000 to a group but allegedly faced excuses when it was her turn to be celebrated.
“Very good. That was how my Mom join a group and contributed over 300k. When it was her turn to be celebrated they started giving different type of excuses. I told her to leave the group and block everybody.”
Chrisgreat argued that leaving the group shortly after benefiting from its support could be viewed as violating the understanding among members.
“When an individual treats a community support system as a one-time welfare payout, they break the social pact. Reclaiming those assets was an intense enforcement mechanism, but it reflects the severe consequence of weaponizing goodwill.”
King Resilience, however, said the club’s decision to take back the items was questionable, despite acknowledging that the gifts appeared to have been tied to membership.
“If the gifts were conditional on membership, leaving two weeks later was a breach of the spirit of the agreement. But taking them back unilaterally was still messy. The better move was to discuss it and agree on a fair resolution.”
Another user, Martins, took a more humorous approach while criticising the group.
“I’m disappointed in you all. How could all of you go to his house to cart away what you bought for him without beating him?”
Ndubuisi, meanwhile, supported the decision to reclaim the items, writing: “That’s how it supposed to be nah 😂 The moment he left the club, those gifts became club property again.”
