Ogun Varsity strengthens ties with police, Amotekun, others over campus security

The management of Tai Solarin Federal University of Education, TASFUED, Ijagun, Ogun State, has strengthened collaboration with security agencies to improve security within the campus and host communities.
The university held strategic engagements with the Ogun State Police Command, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Ogun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun, and So-Safe Corps, focusing on intelligence sharing, security infrastructure, personnel deployment and coordinated response to emerging threats.
Speaking at the Police headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the delegation led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Samuel Oladipo, commended the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, for a prompt response to security incidents and efforts to apprehend suspects.
In his response, CP Ojajuni identified insufficient perimeter fencing, poor road infrastructure and dispersal of students across surrounding communities as major security challenges.
He said the command would reinforce its presence around the university, including strengthening the existing police post and reviewing personnel deployment.
At the NSCDC Command Headquarters, Owu-Dekudu, Abeokuta, the team met with the State Commandant, Remilekun Ekundayo, where discussions centred on intelligence sharing, emergency response and protection of educational institutions against theft, cultism, drug abuse, vandalism and kidnapping.
Ekundayo emphasized proactive planning, credible intelligence and sustained collaboration, and reaffirmed the corps’ readiness to work with the university.
Oladipo said the university was reinforcing its perimeter fencing, installing security gadgets, improving lighting at strategic locations and providing motorcycles to support security agencies.
He disclosed that management was engaging private developers to provide additional student accommodation within the campus to enhance monitoring and safety.
At the Amotekun headquarters, the Corps Commander, Brig. Gen. Alade Adedigba (rtd), said the state government was committed to protecting schools and maintaining a secure environment for socio-economic development.
Adedigba urged the university to fast-track completion of its perimeter fence and assured the university of the agency’s continued support.
At the So-Safe Corps headquarters, discussions with the State Commander, Soji Ganzallo, focused on intelligence sharing, community participation and operational capacity.
Ganzallo stressed the need for community engagement and involvement of traditional rulers and community leaders in identifying risks and sharing credible information.
Across the engagements, the university management noted that effective security goes beyond law enforcement and requires adequate infrastructure, accessible roads, functional surveillance systems and community participation.
As part of capacity building, Oladipo identified the Centre for Human Rights and Gender Education, CHURGE, as a platform for collaboration in sensitization, peacebuilding, conflict management and professional security training.
He encouraged security personnel to take advantage of programmes offered through CHURGE in collaboration with the Institute of Security.
