Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to give every child in the United States a share in his space exploration company, SpaceX, starting next year.

Musk, widely regarded as the world’s richest man, made the announcement on Monday through a post on his social media platform, X.

“Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America,” he wrote.

He added that the proposed initiative would be the first of several similar programmes, but did not provide details on how the shares would be distributed or the conditions children would need to meet to benefit.

According to 2024 data from the United States Census Bureau, the country has approximately 73 million children under the age of 18. If implemented as announced, the plan could involve a substantial number of shares.

Forbes estimates that Musk owns about 38 per cent of SpaceX, the aerospace company known for developing rockets and spacecraft for commercial and government missions.

The announcement comes weeks after US President Donald Trump promised to give every American adult $5,000 if his Republican Party retains control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

However, Musk has yet to explain the financial arrangements, eligibility requirements or timeline for distributing the proposed SpaceX shares to children.

SpaceX reportedly made history in June after raising $85.7 billion through its initial public offering (IPO), making it the largest IPO ever recorded.

The company also achieved a major milestone in September when its Starship mega-rocket reached orbit for the first time. The rocket is central to Musk’s long-term ambition to establish a human presence on Mars.

If Musk’s proposed giveaway goes ahead, it could provide millions of American children with a direct financial stake in one of the world’s most prominent space technology companies.
