Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has met with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other top officials as the party prepares to inaugurate its National Campaign Council ahead of the 2027 general elections. The meeting focused on the party’s preparedness for the elections, the coordination of its political structures and efforts to ensure that its candidates and leaders work together towards a common electoral objective.

Dickson disclosed the development after returning from an overseas working trip.

He said the discussions were part of ongoing consultations ahead of the formal inauguration of the campaign council, which is expected to oversee the party’s activities during the nationwide election campaign.

Those who attended the meeting included Obi and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who is also a senior member of the NDC.

The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) later joined the discussions.

According to Dickson, the consultations provided an opportunity for the party’s leadership to review its preparations and discuss how to strengthen cooperation among its various political structures ahead of the polls.

The former governor also held a separate meeting with members of the NWC, with Lawal in attendance.

During the meeting, the party’s leadership briefed him on arrangements for the unveiling and inauguration of the National Campaign Council.

Dickson expressed satisfaction with the level of coordination among the party’s leaders and said the discussions had reinforced his confidence in the party’s readiness to move into the next phase of its preparations.

He explained that the campaign council would not be limited to promoting the presidential candidate.

Instead, it would coordinate the activities of all NDC candidates seeking elective positions across the country.

NDC Leaders Meeting Ahead of Campaign Council Inauguration

The council is expected to cover campaigns for the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

Its responsibilities will include ensuring that candidates at different levels work within a common framework and that the party presents a consistent message to voters.

“This will be a campaign for the entire NDC, from top to bottom, with all candidates and party leaders actively involved and taking ownership of the process,” Dickson said.

He indicated that the party intended to involve its leadership and candidates in planning and implementing its campaign strategy rather than leaving the responsibility to a small group of officials.

Dickson said further consultations would continue before the campaign council’s inauguration. He maintained that the party was working to consolidate its organisation and ensure that its leaders remained committed to the same political direction.

The NDC leader also sought to reassure Nigerians that the party was united as it prepared to take its message to voters across the federation.

“I assure them that our leaders are united and on the same page, and we will take the NDC message to every nook and cranny of Nigeria,” he said.

He further signalled that the party intended to step up its public mobilisation following the inauguration of the campaign council, suggesting that the next phase would involve a more visible presence across the country.

“From next week, we will paint the whole country blue,” he declared.
