A suspected thief found himself at the centre of an unusual public spectacle after being caught making away with a gallon of groundnut oil, an offence his apprehenders decided to punish not with the usual beating, but by making him dance for an audience instead.
In the footage, the man is seen standing surrounded by a group of onlookers, the stolen gallon of oil placed directly in front of him as the crowd broke into song, urging him to move to the rhythm.
Visibly nervous and clearly uncomfortable with the attention, he began dancing hesitantly, his fear evident with every awkward step he took to satisfy the crowd’s demands.
The performance didn’t stop there. At one point, his captors upped the challenge, instructing him to balance the gallon of groundnut oil on his head while continuing to dance, turning what had already been a humiliating ordeal into an even more difficult physical task to complete under the crowd’s watchful eyes.
Onlookers can be heard laughing and clapping along throughout the video, treating the moment more as entertainment than a serious act of correction, a reflection of how some communities continue to blend humour with public shaming when dealing with petty theft cases.
While unconventional compared to some of the harsher punishments often meted out in similar situations, questions remain over whether such public humiliation tactics serve any real deterrent purpose, or whether the matter was ever formally reported to the police for proper handling.
