The 13 Lagos Areas At Most Risk Of Flooding – NiHSA, State Govt.

The Lagos State Government has ordered residents living in flood-prone and low-lying communities to relocate to higher ground following a fresh seven-day flood alert issued by the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA).

The alert, covering September 19 to 25, 2026, warns of rising river levels that could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities across the state.

Here are 13 areas residents have been warned to watch:

1. Eti-Osa

Parts of Eti-Osa identified as vulnerable to flooding are on the state government’s alert list.

2. Lagos Island

Residents in vulnerable parts of Lagos Island have been urged to remain vigilant and prepare for possible flooding.

3. Oke-Ira Nla, Ajah

The Oke-Ira Nla community in Ajah is among the areas that could be affected by rising water levels.

4. Kirikiri

Residents around Kirikiri, including the seaport area, have been warned to prepare for possible flooding.

5. Ilaje Waterfront Jetty

The waterfront community is specifically identified as vulnerable under the latest flood advisory.

6. Jetty Terminal B

Jetty Terminal B is also among locations that could experience flooding during the alert period.

7. Isheri North

Residents around Isheri North have been advised to remain on high alert because of potential downstream effects from rising river levels.

8. Kara

The Kara area is among communities downstream that could be affected by increased water levels.

9. Itowolo

Residents in Itowolo have been advised to monitor official flood warnings and be prepared to relocate temporarily if necessary.

10. Ajegunle

Ajegunle is listed among riverine and low-lying communities requiring heightened vigilance.

11. Majidun

Residents of Majidun have been urged to pay close attention to official flood alerts throughout the warning period.

12. Ogolonto

Ogolonto is another downstream community identified as vulnerable to possible flooding.

13. Parts of Agboyi

Some low-lying communities in Agboyi are also expected to face heightened flood risks.

Why residents are being warned

The state government said communities along the Ogun River and other major waterways face additional risks as heavy rainfall upstream could increase water levels downstream.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, urged residents not to wait for floodwaters to rise before taking action.

“When the signs point to danger, the safest decision is to move early. No property is worth risking a life.”

Residents in vulnerable communities have been advised to move to higher ground and remain there until the peak of the rainy season passes.

They have also been warned against walking or driving through flooded roads, bridges and fast-moving water.

The government further urged residents to stop dumping refuse into drains, canals and waterways, noting that blocked drainage channels could worsen flooding and delay the recession of floodwaters.
