Peter Obi: ‘I Didn’t Borrow Money From Any Bank as Anambra Governor’

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has denied borrowing money or issuing bonds on behalf of the state during his eight years in office.

Obi made the clarification amid his ongoing public disagreement with incumbent Anambra Governor Chukwuma Soludo over claims concerning debts, gratuities and other financial obligations allegedly left behind by his administration.

Speaking on Arise Television’s Prime Time on Thursday night, Obi said he did not approach any bank or financial institution to obtain loans for Anambra State throughout his tenure.

According to him, his administration left office without owing salaries, pensions or gratuities that were due for payment at the time.

He also maintained that his administration had settled all verified obligations to contractors and suppliers who had completed and received certification for their projects.

Obi said: “I, Mr Peter Obi, didn’t approach any financial institution to borrow money or issue bonds on behalf of Anambra State in the eight years I was in government.”

He added that when he left office, the state was not owing any salary, gratuity or pension that had become due, while contractors and suppliers whose work had been completed, certified and verified had also been paid.
