Lagos Waste Crisis: 12 Key Decisions From Gov Sanwo-Olu’s Olusosun Visit

Following the Lagos State Government announcement on measures to tackle recent delays in waste collection across the state, including the deployment of 160 new waste compactors.

TVC News reported that the announcement followed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s inspection of waste management operations at the Olusosun dumpsite. Sanwo-Olu acknowledged residents’ frustration over waste piling up in parts of Lagos, describing the situation as unacceptable.

Below are key highlights from Sanwo-Olu’s visit

1. Lagos State is strengthening its waste management infrastructure with new Transfer Loading Stations, Material Recovery Facilities and additional disposal capacity.

2. Two Transfer Loading Stations are being developed at Olusosun and Solous 3, with a combined capacity aimed at improving the movement of waste from collection points to recovery and disposal facilities.

3. Material Recovery Facilities are planned to support waste sorting, recycling and resource recovery.

4. Immediate measures are being implemented to improve truck turnaround at Olusosun, including increasing the number of tipping platforms from the existing two.

5. The state government is working towards having four active dumpsites operating within the next six weeks to ease pressure on individual disposal locations.

6. Additional compactor trucks have been ordered to strengthen Lagos’ waste collection fleet and address existing capacity gaps.

7. The state government will provide additional funding for road stabilisation, equipment and other operational requirements needed to improve waste disposal.

8. The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been directed to strengthen its operational workforce, with more personnel deployed to streets, roads and dumpsites to improve service delivery.

9. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu acknowledged residents’ frustration over waste piling up in parts of Lagos, describing the situation as unacceptable.

10. The governor reaffirmed that achieving a cleaner Lagos is a shared responsibility involving the government, residents and waste operators.

11. Lagos is combining immediate operational measures with long-term infrastructure investments to build a more efficient, sustainable and resilient waste management system.

12. From infrastructure and equipment to improved truck turnaround and expanded disposal capacity, the state government says it is taking practical steps to strengthen waste management and achieve a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable environment.
