Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has expressed the state government’s commitment to improving the welfare, professional development and working conditions of house officers across the state.

Abayomi stated this after receiving house officers from General Hospital Lagos, Massey Street Children’s Hospital and Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, who paid a courtesy visit to his office.

“House officers are the primary link to our patients, investing in their welfare and growth is investing in the health of Lagos,” Abayomi said in a post on X.

The commissioner described the young doctors as “the backbone of clinical care across Lagos State,” noting their dedication to healthcare delivery and community service.

He said the meeting provided an opportunity to discuss key welfare initiatives aimed at continuously improving the working and living conditions of house officers.

Abayomi also expressed support for the proposed House Officers’ Mentorship Experience (HOME), a 12-month pilot programme designed to pair house officers with experienced consultants.

According to him, the initiative would provide young doctors with guidance in clinical practice, leadership and personal development as they begin their medical careers.

“I am particularly excited about their proposed House Officers’ Mentorship Experience (HOME), a 12-month pilot program matching our house officers with experienced consultants to guide their clinical growth, leadership, and personal development,” he said.

The commissioner also commended the house officers for their contribution to healthcare delivery and their participation in community outreach activities during House Officers Week 2026.

He thanked the team for the customised souvenir apparel presented during the visit and reaffirmed the state government’s support for their commitment to healthcare delivery.

“Thank you to the team for the thoughtful, customized souvenir apparel and for your unwavering commitment to healthcare in Lagos State. We stand fully behind you!” Abayomi said.
