IYC NATIONAL LEGAL ADVISER SPEAKS ON CYBER LAW, DIGITAL RIGHTS AT NDU EXPO

The National Legal Adviser of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide, Meshack N. Sintei, Esq., has charged students of Niger Delta University (NDU), Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, to embrace responsible use of technology and understand their rights and responsibilities in the digital space.

Sintei gave the charge while serving as keynote speaker at the Xplore & Exploit Computing – Cyber & IT Ethics Expo, organised by the Department of Computer Science, Niger Delta University.

Speaking on the theme, “Cyber Law, Digital Rights & Responsible Use of the Internet,” the IYC National Legal Adviser emphasised that activities carried out online are subject to legal and ethical responsibilities.

He urged students to understand the implications of their actions on digital platforms, stressing the importance of knowing their rights, recognising potential risks and acting responsibly online.

According to him, “Your phone is a courtroom. Know your rights. Know your risks. Know your responsibilities.”

The keynote address covered a range of contemporary digital issues, including cybersecurity, digital privacy, freedom of expression, cyberstalking, data protection, artificial intelligence ethics, deepfakes and the need for responsible online communication.

Sintei also cautioned young people against acting impulsively on social media, encouraging them to think carefully before clicking, posting or sharing content.

He further stressed that technological advancement must be matched by human responsibility.

“Technology is powerful. But responsibility must be more powerful,” he stated.

The IYC National Legal Adviser challenged the students to become a generation capable of innovating while respecting human dignity and the rights of others.

He noted that the future belongs to those who can use technology not only to express themselves but also to create meaningful positive impact in society.

Sintei expressed appreciation to the Department of Computer Science, NDU, for the invitation and for presenting him with a plaque of recognition.

He also acknowledged his friend, Jiffy Bond, for the invitation and efforts that led to his participation as keynote speaker at the event.

The IYC National Legal Adviser further appreciated members and staff of the Office of the National Legal Adviser, IYC Worldwide, who accompanied him to the programme.

He also recognised Comr. Fidelis Agbogidi, Student Representative of IYC Central Zone, for joining him at the event.

The programme provided an avenue for students and participants to engage with emerging issues surrounding technology, law, ethics and responsible digital citizenship.
