FG Declares October 1 Public Holiday for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary

The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Magdalene Ajani.

The minister congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad on the occasion and urged citizens to use the anniversary to reflect on the values of national unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

Tunji-Ojo called on Nigerians to emulate the country’s founding fathers by demonstrating greater commitment to the development and progress of the nation.

According to the minister, peace and stability are essential to national development, adding that Nigerians have a collective responsibility to contribute to the country’s progress.

He also described Nigeria’s human and natural resources as significant national assets and said the country remained a source of hope and opportunity.

Tunji-Ojo assured Nigerians that the President Bola Tinubu-led administration would continue to pursue its Renewed Hope Agenda, with emphasis on national security, public safety and creating an environment where citizens can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations with confidence.

He further urged Nigerians to use the Independence celebration to promote national unity and peaceful coexistence.

The minister said the Federal Government remained committed to building a better Nigeria and expressed confidence that a new Nigeria is achievable through collective efforts by citizens.

The October 1 holiday will allow Nigerians to mark the country’s independence anniversary and reflect on the nation’s journey since gaining independence.
