Economic Forecasting Reform…

The federal government has moved to strengthen the accuracy and credibility of economic forecasts used in preparing Nigeria’s budgets and managing the economy.
Key Highlights
- FG moves to improve economic forecasting.
- Ministries review gaps in budget assumptions.
- Oil revenue projections showed major discrepancies.
- Government plans a standing macroeconomic data committee.
- Central data repository to promote consistent figures.
The Federal Ministry of Finance and the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning convened a macroeconomic data and assumptions validation workshop on August 29, 2026, bringing together key government institutions responsible for fiscal, monetary and economic data.
The workshop focused on ensuring that government budgeting and economic planning are based on reliable data, realistic projections and clearly defined forecasting methods.
Participants reviewed previous budget cycles and identified gaps between some of the economic assumptions used in planning and the eventual outcomes.
Oil production and revenue projections were among the areas where significant differences had been recorded, prompting calls for stronger forecasting methods and better coordination among government agencies.
The workshop agreed that future budget projections should be subjected to more rigorous analysis to minimise overly optimistic assumptions and improve the reliability of government forecasts.
One of the major resolutions was the establishment of a standing committee on macroeconomic data and assumptions.

The proposed committee will be responsible for validating key economic data and assumptions, conducting continuous reviews and reporting its findings to the economic management team.
The government also agreed to develop a central data repository that would allow relevant institutions to work from a common and consistent set of economic figures and assumptions.
Another resolution was the creation of a unified national data reporting framework containing standard definitions for key fiscal indicators, including revenue, expenditure and government borrowing.
The workshop further called for stronger coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities, as well as improvements in the availability and quality of national economic statistics.
Particular attention was drawn to data covering employment, productivity and producer prices, which participants identified as important for effective economic planning and policy decisions.
The government also plans to strengthen the methodology used in preparing the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) and annual budgets.
Under the proposed approach, major economic assumptions would undergo sensitivity analysis and scenario testing before being adopted in final budget documents.
The measures are part of the federal government’s broader efforts to improve fiscal transparency, accountability and evidence-based economic management.
Officials said the reforms are expected to help government institutions make more realistic projections, identify potential economic risks earlier and improve the quality of decisions taken during the budgeting process.
The initiative also seeks to ensure that fiscal and economic policies are increasingly guided by consistent data rather than isolated projections from individual institutions.
The government maintained that improving the quality of economic data and assumptions would ultimately strengthen planning and contribute to better economic outcomes for Nigerians.
