Breaking: Veteran actor Olu Jacobs dies at 84

Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.

His death was announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

Olusoji described his father as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle, while paying tribute to his life and legacy.

“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.

He also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the privacy of the family as they mourn the veteran actor.

“We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time,” he added.

Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated veteran actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.

He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) in London and began his professional acting career in British television before appearing in several international productions.

After returning to Nigeria, Jacobs established himself as a major figure in the Nigerian film industry, starring in numerous productions and becoming known for his commanding screen presence and versatility.

Over the course of his career, he received several industry honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.

Beyond acting, Jacobs was also involved in film production and the development of Nigeria’s performing arts sector.

Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was associated with the Lufodo Group, which has played a role in Nigeria’s theatre and film industry.

His death marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned several decades and left a significant imprint on Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
