A suspected vandal has been crushed to death after a 330kV transmission tower collapsed along the Ughelli-Benin transmission line in Delta State.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) disclosed this in a statement signed by its management on Saturday, August 8, 2026, following the discovery of the incident during a patrol of the transmission line.

According to the company, the incident was discovered by its linesmen from the Delta Sub-Region, Lines Maintenance Department, while investigating the tripping of the Ughelli-Benin 330kV transmission line on an earth fault.

TCN said the patrol team traced the fault to Tower 101, which had collapsed, and found the body of the suspected vandal trapped and crushed between the tower members.

Further inspection also revealed that Tower 101 on the adjacent Ughelli-Sapele 330kV transmission line had been extensively vandalised, although the tower remained standing at the time of the inspection.

The company condemned the vandalism and warned of the dangers associated with tampering with electricity infrastructure.

TCN urged residents of host communities and members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities around power installations to security agencies or the nearest TCN office.

It said the fight against vandalism of power infrastructure required collective efforts from communities, security agencies and other stakeholders.

“Vandalism not only leads to power outages and damage to national assets, it also endangers lives. Protecting power infrastructure is a civic responsibility. Stop the vandals, or they will stop power for us all,” the company said.

TCN said the incident served as a tragic reminder of the dangers posed by attempts to tamper with power infrastructure, stressing that protecting transmission facilities was essential to maintaining electricity supply and safeguarding lives.
